One of the most common knee injuries that athletes experience is in the tearing of the ligaments that surround and support the knee. This can be a tear to the ACL, MCL, PCL, or LCL; each of these ligaments provide support. The incidental use of the word "ouch" would not describe the way you feel when something like this happens. These kinds of knee injuries can be very painful and the stability of your knee can be compromised without the strength of these ligaments.
There are 3 different levels of severity that doctors use to determine how serious your knee injury is:
Level One - There is no laxity or give in the ligaments of the knee. This indicates that there are only a few ligaments that are actually stretched / insulted around the knee.
Level Two - There is moderate laxity or give in the ligaments of the knee, which means that there are some fibers of the ligament that are torn but not all of them in the knee are torn.
Level Three - There is a complete give in the ligaments of the knee when there is stress placed on the area. This means that most likely all of the fibers in the ligament are torn and there is a significant injury that has taken place.
Depending on how bad your knee ligaments are injured, there are different treatment plans that your physician may recommend to you. Whatever level of knee injury you have, wearing a knee brace can be one of the best ways for you to help protect your knee and its structural integrity.
